International Engagement Fellowships

The CCP-NC has a fellowship scheme to allow international researchers in the field of NMR crystallography to interact with the UK research community.

Eligibility

CCP-NC International Fellows should be leading researchers in the field (broadly defined) of NMR crystallography who wish to interact with UK-based researchers. “Hosts” must be independent researchers either already working in the area of NMR crystallography or motivated to develop expertise in this area. Potential applicants can apply directly or via a host research group.

The fellowship provides reasonable travel and accommodation expenses within the UK. In other words, the fellowship is a means of extending existing travel plans to the UK, e.g. to attend a conference or for a period of research leave / sabbatical.

On completion, the applicant (fellow or sponsor) will be asked to provide a short report on what has been achieved through the fellowship.

The CCP-NC expects to fund 1 to 2 fellowships per year, up to the end of the current funding period (May 2025). Applications will be prioritised to the extent that they promote the development of NMR crystallography, as assessed by the Working Group of the CCP-NC.

Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss their application in advance with Prof. Paul Hodgkinson (Director of CCP-NC) or Prof. Sharon Ashbrook (Co-director of CCP-NC).

Application

Applications should be made at least 2 months in advance of travel to allow time for approval. Applications cannot be made retrospectively.

The amount requested will need to be briefly justified, based on estimated costs. It is anticipated that the fellowships will cover a large majority (~80%) of the actual costs incurred. Requests of up to £1200 may be made to cover key costs, such as travel and accommodation. Subsistence, unless part of other key costs, is not covered. Any significant differences between requested travel costs and the original itinerary need to be justified.

The costs incurred need to be in-line with institutional travel policies. We strongly recommend booking travel through your institution to avoid difficulties at a later stage when your costs are reimbursed through Durham University, who will be following national (UKRI) guidelines on eligible costs. Where possible, expenditure should be booked before travel, e.g. pre-booked transfers rather than ad hoc taxi fares. If you are unsure whether proposed travel arrangements may be ineligible, please contact Kane Shenton.

Note that the reimbursement can only be made after the fellowship is completed. A link to the reimbursement form will appear here in due course.

Application Procedure

Please email us with a document (PDF/Word/ODF) containing the following information:

  • Objectives
    • An overview of the goals of the fellowship.
  • Host (or hosts)
    • Name and email address of UK host(s).
  • Proposed itinerary
    • Exact dates are less important than information about the length and purpose of stay.
  • Estimated costs
    • Costs should be reasonable estimates, compatible with typical university travel policies, and strike an appropriate balance between costs and convenience. Please plan on the basis that reimbursement will capped at the original total requested.
  • Reasons for support
    • Explain why the proposed fellowship will be of benefit to the field of NMR crystallography. Priority will be given to applications involving new collaborations, demonstrable "knowledge transfer", and the development of CCP-NC supported tools.
